The Rich Rule the World"Greed is good in all areas...greed is legal." Gekko reiterates his point of view in an eloquent speech given to Teldar Paper shareholders. “…greed…, will not only save Teldar Paper, but also that other broken corporation called USA” (Stone, 1987) Gekko recognizes the influence of greed in the world and the manipulative power it brings. As a matter of fact, the rich continue to manipulate society and control the poor, but they have few consequences for their actions because it is their greed and wealth that keeps the economy going. The rich people rule the world The rich people rule the world through manipulation. One way the rich manipulate society is through Wall Street, or the stock market. Brokers convince clients to invest in stocks at prices far above their comfort zone. Then they turn around and collect commissions from those high sales. It's a deceptive game that only the fit and insensitive win. This happens in “Broiler Room” when Seth wipes out a doctor's life savings and destroys his marriage by selling him stocks that didn't exist. He continued to deceive his customers for his own greedy gain. We see in the movie “Boiler Room”, poor commission management and abuse of intermediaries that parallels our lives today (Younger, Todd, & Todd, 2001). In fact, according to John Bellamy's article, a poll revealed that 71% of the public believes that limits should be placed on Wall Street executive compensation (Foster & Holleman, 2010). The rich also influence the actions of investors, and when some of them invest, they allow their greed to dictate how things are run within our financial society.
