A new world of sportsNike started a worldwide phenomenon involving the progression of athletic shoes from initially impractical and heavy to lightweight and efficient shoes. Starting in the 1950s, Nike's first mission was to create a shoe that allowed athletes to compete better and more comfortably. With its long lines of athletic footwear, Nike has enabled people to not only become better athletes, but encouraged them to start a healthier lifestyle through affordable and even fashionable shoes. Nike started with the help of two very innovative men: Bill Bowerman and Phil Cavaliere. Bowerman was the track and field coach at the University of Oregon. He often tested different track surfaces in hopes of making a better running shoe for his team. However, manufacturers at the time ignored his ideas, so Bowerman began making shoes himself for his runners in Oregon.
