China has a large population and the one child policy is what the government is using to try to control it. China has a population of over 1.3 billion people, making it the most populous country in the world. The world population is about 6.7 billion people, which means that China accounts for about 20% of the world's population, for every five people one is a Chinese resident. The one-child policy is causing a serious gender imbalance in China because boys are believed to be more valuable to families who have children. In addition to having equal effects on the economy, there is a shortage of workers and there are not enough brides for men. Human rights are something that everyone in the world should have and the one-child policy is against it. The one-child policy is harmful to China and has many aspects against it. When the leader of China was Chairman Mao, previously called the People's Republic of China, the birth rate dropped from 37,000 to 20,000. This is when the one-child policy began. Infant mortality had fallen from 227 per 1,000 births in 1946 to 53 per 10,000 births in 1981, as well as life expectancy had a notable increase from 35 years in 1949 to 66 years in 1967. Until the 1960s, the Chinese government encouraged families to have as many children as possible to increase the population. This was due to Mao's belief that a large population is what gives the country power; this is what started the prevention of the emergence of family planning programs that were present earlier in China's development. The population then had a notable increase from around 540 million in 1949 to 940 million in 1976. Then, starting in 1970, people were strongly encouraged to marry at an older age and to have only two children...... half of the paper ......5 Controls . The controls imposed on Chinese women and their families, as well as further abuse generated by the system. They range from abortion to policies of discrimination against children, which also violate the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the standards of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The one-child policy has had negative effects on China and is causing families to be limited to just one child. There are major gender imbalances caused by people being limited to having only one child. There are also not enough females for males to marry. The one-child policy also goes against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to which China is a signatory. Overall, the one-child policy is not a good thing for China and should be stopped, for the well-being of Chinese residents.
