Problem IdentificationThe “War on Drugs” drug policy implemented by the criminal justice system in the United States has failed to address the war on drug use in America . The United States of America has been fighting for over a century and four presidents have staged this war which has yet to produce significant results. It's a war the United States was losing and drug addicts were everywhere in hospitals, courts and prisons. Drug use has led to violent crimes that have consistently caused harm to neighborhoods in this country, and many children have been lost and abandoned due to drug abuse (Friman, 2008). The United States has occasionally tried to overcome this problem with policies such as the “War on Drugs,” and the government has spent billions of dollars to combat drug abuse, but law enforcement has been costly and counterproductive. The U.S. government must shift its spending from drug law enforcement to treatment, education, and prevention as optional policies that can have good results (Paley, 2014). The criminal justice system is primarily intended to punish individuals who cannot live peacefully within society and is an ineffective and narrow-minded system when intended to address health issues (Paley, 2014). However, efficiency is not the case in the United States since the policy of combating drug abuse has been left to the criminal justice system. A collaborative approach that treats all participants and engages the community with respect is more humane and also more effective. Harsh methods are the reason these policies do not work and cannot solve drug abuse problems. For the United States to be prepared to fight drug abuse, the punitive approach must be stopped. .....on and allowed us to respond effectively to the problem in a different way. The problem of drug abuse touches every family and every member of society, and there are millions of Americans who have successfully recovered from drug use disorder. A more humane drug abuse policy has proven effective in overcoming drug addiction, and the United States should embrace change in adopting this policy. Conclusion It is necessary to change the current drug policy due to inefficiency by adopting the above recommendation policy which is scientific based and has credibility through justifiable statistics and research. If success against drug abuse is to be achieved, policy should consist of evidence-based prevention programs, rooted in scientific research on addiction, historical emphasis on recovery, increased access to treatment, and comprehensive criminal justice reform (Carmen, 2015).
