Topic > Why should tobacco be banned? - 747

The world often forgets how harmful tobacco can be. It kills six million people every year and that number will increase killing more people than heroin, cocaine and other illegal drugs. (Newmann, 2009). As you legislators should know, the main factor is a stimulant called nicotine, but it contains 4,000 other chemicals, of which 2,000 are poisonous. (Government of Saskatchewan, n.d.). If you know that tobacco is harmful, why not make a law to ban it and make it illegal? Therefore, tobacco is a harmful substance and should be banned. First, most smokers don't like their habit. Smoking is not a recreational drug but an addiction. Smokers don't like what they do and want to quit. As a matter of fact, 35 million people make serious attempts to quit every year. Unfortunately, most people who try to quit on their own regress within a week. (National Institute of Drug Abuse, n.d.). Smoking is not a recreational drug, but it is more addictive than any other illegal drug. Only 10-15% of people who drink are alcoholics and 80-90% of smokers are drug addicts. An influential Canadian executive says that smoking is not like drinking, but rather like being an alcoholic. Tobacco use is more obsessive than marijuana use due to the chemicals it contains. THC, the main chemical in marijuana, represents a chemical already existing in the brain that attaches itself to those who receive the drug. Unlike tobacco, it is easier not to depend on THC. (Campbell, 2014). This shows how cigarettes are very different from alcohol and marijuana, expressing how difficult it is to kick the habit. Smoking is a bad environment to be in. (Proctor, 2013). Save lives, ban tobacco. Furthermore, smoking tobacco is also a sign... middle of paper... ...strengthens your body. For example, tar, a substance found in tobacco, contains many chemicals including several carcinogens such as benzo(a)pyrene. Smoking, like drugs, is an addiction caused by these chemicals. They need to smoke nicotine to feel “normal” every day, to control their mood and satisfy their cravings (“Tobacco Banning,” n.d.). Life does not need tobacco to depend on; however it brings many problems to people all over the world. Save lives and ban tobacco. Tobacco has a huge impact on the world. It affects people of various ages, including teenagers and adults, causing them to try something new and thus creating dangerous consequences. To end the harm caused by tobacco, we should make the growing and selling of tobacco illegal, impose fines on people who still buy and use tobacco, and send anyone who produces tobacco to prison. Save the laws, ban tobacco.
