Universal opinions about men and women change from generation to generation. Baby boomers may see a woman as someone whose dominance is perhaps more in the family than in a typical work environment. Women are becoming more competitive in the work environment and not only with other women, but also with men. Women also seem to take advantage of the absence of the glass ceiling that once existed. The roles of men have also changed in recent years. The growth of stay-at-home dads has increased dramatically, and some women have become the breadwinners in some families. The role of gender in today's society influences employment opportunities, physical appearance and emotional state of being. Women are more in touch with their feelings and sensitive side than most men. Help is often sought for personal problems and emotional dilemmas. The idea of being in touch with your “feminine side” doesn't necessarily mean feeling comfortable wearing clothes, but not being afraid to show emotion. Confronting emotional problems seems to be more common in women than in men. A couple of guys in a bar don't tend to talk about emotional detachment with their male friends, or problems with their spouse's emotional absence. Women have a strong predisposition to help in many delicate matters, and particularly in the home. Men have more mechanical thinking when dealing with problems. When a woman is in emotional turmoil; a male may want to help solve the problem without any emotional attachment. I remember a few days after my grandmother's death my sister dropped a family heirloom and I offered my assistance in helping her repair it. All my sister kept doing was telling me to leave in an angry tone, and only later did I realize that I was just... halfway through a sheet of paper... other women around might feel like they were competing with the 'appearance of that celebrity. Men, on the other hand, are judged more based on their success than on outward appearance. In today's society, a woman is unlikely to consider a handsome, economically disadvantaged man as a candidate for marriage. Women see men as providers and need to be able to turn to them in difficult times. If a man cannot provide financially or emotionally for a woman, he is considered inept, and for women, lack of beauty can be a major obstacle when trying to attract the opposite sex. Bob Dylan once said, “The times they are changing,” women everywhere are gaining more respect from their peers and are seen as hard workers instead of just eye candy. Changing the views of past generations will be difficult, but today's society can work to change how future generations perceive gender in society.
