Communication and interpersonal skills are closely related in the professional nurse-client relationship. There are different types of communication in professional nursing. They are written communication, verbal communication and non-verbal communication. (Craven & Hirnle, 2009). In this essay I will recall and describe my experience in a healthcare environment and reflect on communication in such an interaction. I will review the interpersonal and communication skills used by the healthcare professional and what I learned from this interaction. And whether I will use these skills in my future nursing practice. I would like to describe my recent experience with the nurse. I visited the clinic to evaluate my health and immunity status. I needed to get referrals for blood tests and vaccinations. He invited me in. The nurse asked me my preferred name to address. She made sure she and I were seated on the same level. The nurse maintained direct eye contact with me throughout the entire conversation. He maintained my personal space. The nurse was actively involving me in communication. She was encouraging me to ask questions and was ready to provide the necessary information. He was making sure I fully understood all the nuances of the conversation when he realized that English was not my first language. He was avoiding the use of medical jargon to make the conversation easier to understand. The nurse spoke in a soft, unhurried voice that expressed genuine interest. For me it was an invitation to join the conversation. The nurse was very kind, respectful and caring. I got all the necessary information for blood tests and vaccinations, armed with all the relevant information in this regard. This interaction made me feel helpless… middle of paper… positive. And the nurse will be perceived as a highly qualified professional, as well as a very friendly and caring person. I think this is the ideal image for contemporary nursing. And all of us, as future nurses, should strive to achieve high standards in being professional yet friendly and caring. Works Cited Arnold, E. C., & Boggs, K. (2011).
