After the end of World War I in 1920, the United States entered a period in which great changes were made. During this period known as the New Era of the 1920s, many innovations and economic developments occurred, spurring change in American society. However, while for some Americans this was an era of better life opportunities, others suffered the consequences. Subsequently, with an unequal distribution of wealth and low incomes, the American economy found itself at a vulnerable point towards catastrophic collapse. And so it was. In the late 1920s, when the stock market crashed, the prosperity of that era faded, and the nation descended into an economic catastrophe known as the Great Depression. Many factors constituted the reasons for this collapse, for example the collapse of Wall Street, the dominance of oligopolies over American industries, the weakness of some industries (textile, coal and agriculture), but also government policies and international economic difficulties. Then, in the early 1930s, with the Depression spreading and affecting the entire society, the policies, philosophy, and optimism that Herbert Hoover had brought to his presidency were called into question. As a result, by the time of the 1932 election, Hoover lost the presidency to the Democratic Party candidate, Franklin D. Roosevelt and his campaign of what he called the New Deal. Based on this, FDR pushed for many solutions to the “crises of a collapsing financial system, crippling unemployment, and agricultural and industrial collapse” (Goldfield, page 704).
