Healing Hospital: A Bold Paradigm The purpose of this article is to present a description of one component of a healing hospital and its correlation with spirituality. The document will also identify the challenges of creating a healing environment despite the barriers and complexities of the hospital environment. Additionally, it will highlight the biblical context supporting the concept of the healing hospital by providing rationale for the chosen context. Context A healing hospital is the environment that creates a culture of radical loving care among staff, patients and families. How Mercy Gilbert Hospital in Arizona, under the leadership of Eberst, L., in recognition of their work of excellence, was ranked the No. 1 healing hospital among the 10 healing hospitals in this country in 2008 by a jury national team composed of six members. (Healing Trust, 2009). A healing hospital helps patients feel safe, comfortable with the provision of compassionate care by staff with the integration of spirituality not only for patients but for families as a whole. Furthermore, a healing hospital is a supportive and pleasant, stress-free environment that promotes and enhances the effective healing process. Essentially, their concepts are in support of the culture of providing radical loving care. In the 19th century, Florence Nightingale identified that “To heal, one must be healthy in body, mind, and spirit” (University of Minnesota, 2013). This passage recognizes compassion as a healing factor and to live and socialize in a community one must be physically and emotionally healthy. In conclusion, a healing hospital is an environment where all staff are involved in a relationship aimed at providing compassionate, stress-free and radical loving care to patients and families for spiritual, mental and physical healing.
