In the play “A Midsummer Night's Dream” by William Shakespeare, the contrast between the setting and the character is well explained throughout the play. This play is mainly about four young Athenians whose lives become a total disaster due to fairies in the forest, strange situations in the city of Athens, Greece, and love potion mixes. The main setting of “A Midsummer Night's Dream” is Athens, Greece. In Athens, Duke Theseus plans his marriage to Hippolyta. Instead, the forest is where all the drama between all the characters happens. The four main characters in this play are Hermia, Helena, Demetrius and Lysander. In this writing, I will discuss the contrast between Helena and Hermia. Both Helena and Hermia face serious problems finding love, but they both show the theme in different ways. Helena is described as a tall woman but unsure of herself. Even though she is tall and Hermia is short; Hermia is a woman full of passion and respect. During this game, questions like; How do you find love? What kind of people find true love?, the answer is clear. For starters, this play is full of comedy but also conflict between characters. Helena is the kind of woman who has no self-esteem. This is because she does everything to be loved by a man who doesn't love her and that is Demetrius. Helena represents the character of a woman who desperately wants to have love. In other words, Helena is different from Hermia because she is an insecure woman full of jealousy. Helena tries to do everything to distance Lysander from his old best friend Hermia. He thinks love can be found by letting the person you love do anything to you. As a result, Hermia believes that he ...... middle of paper ...... treats her well, she disobeyed her father's order and ran away with Lysander. In the part where the love potion mixed and both men loved Helena, Hermia was very jealous but eventually found her true lover. In final consideration, both Helena and Hermia represent love but in completely different ways. It's the gap between the good and the bad that exists between the two of them. I also say this, I don't blame Helena for the things she did because it hurts not to be loved back by someone you truly love. However, it was a happy ending for both women because in the end they both married the person they loved. The contrast is about the meaning of the work as each character has something to do, loves and they all show it differently. By adding funny comic scenes and conflicts, Shakespeare's play “A Midsummer Night's Dream” showed exactly what a person goes through to find love.
