From Mandarin to Cantonese; From Hakka to Hokkien, the Chinese language is filled with a variety of similar-sounding yet different dialects. However, in an article from the Malaysian news portal called Malaysian Chronicle, it is shown that this diversity is slowly being erased: from 1946 to early 2014, AiFM was the most faithful radio station in Malaysia to broadcast daily news in different Chinese dialects . i.e. Hakka, Cantonese, Teochew and Hokkien. The recent discontinuation of this 30-minute daily program occurred under the pretext that AiFM needed to reduce costs. The article states that the Chinese community, especially the older audience who only understand dialects, especially those living in rural areas, will be severely affected. “These people can understand major developments within the country only through dialect news.
