Topic > Analysis of The Turning Road by Andre Derain - 972

In this exquisite artwork named "The Turning Road", by Andre Derain, there are many artistic elements showing different types of lines, shapes, textures, spaces , light and color. This artwork has an automatic design that looks casual and adventurous. I can see the two-dimensionality of the tree trunk and branches that have the outline of a cylinder and a rectangle. There are vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines used to emphasize the curvy trunk of the tree and the diagonal branches protruding from the tree in this design. Thin and short lines are also displayed behind the large and thick trunk of the tree to avoid attention and make us understand that there are many other huge trees nearby. Lines were used in the image to create tonal variation and simulate texture. “The curved road, the tree trunks and branches, and the choreographed forms of the villagers all swing in an integrated rhythm,” which focuses our attention on how the artist has used lines to create a free-form way that adds excitement about design. He also applied different colors to shimmer in flat shapes to make the landscape and the expressive feeling of the villagers more alive. The house and street shapes have a smooth, rounded corner that appears distorted. I don't see any three dimensional shapes used in this painting, however, the artist tends to portray different angles that allow the viewer to see certain things such as the trees and curved road to stand out and grab the viewer's attention. The shapes used in the painting look organic, due to the natural outdoor environment and authentic colors. In the representation of peoples, the shape gives character to a figure by giving it a structure more similar to the human one, the human shape of...... in the center of the card ...... the monkeys have a different shape where it causes the trees in the background are smaller than the trees closest to the edge of the curved road. Opposites are made to create a vibrant object to balance the color in the painting, as straight lines were used to make many tree trunks, bridges and houses; therefore curved lines were placed in the upper parts of the tree, the thickness of the arc forming the curved road is simply accentuated by the thickness of its edges. Furthermore, the use of complementary colors used in this painting gives a warm and cool temperature to capture the surroundings of the village. The thick lines in the tree trunks on the far right draw attention to the front of the painting where most of the action appears to be taking place, which also makes the shape look smoother as the left turn onto the road curves above the village.
