Have you ever ordered something from a website like Amazon? Almost everyone has and received that package via UPS. So you know the problem of having a four-hour window on when that package will arrive at your door, with no update on how close they are or whether they'll arrive later than that pre-arranged time. This paper will address this issue and its association with the ERP used by United Parcel Service (UPS). Context This document will attempt to answer the following four crucial questions: • Identify a company or industry that interests you • Answer the question: "What/What are the ways this company uses information systems?" are the problems or shortcomings of the system?• What would be your recommendations for improving it?Identify a company or industry of interestThe company chosen for this project is United Parcel Service (UPS). UPS was founded in 1907 by Jim Casey, as the American Messenger Company (AMC), in Seattle, Washington. In 1913, they changed their name to Merchants Parcel Delivery (MPD) when they purchased their first Model T Ford. After making their first expansion to Oakland, California in 1919, they once again changed their name to what it is today : United Parcel Service. In 1981 UPS purchased its first airplane, and in 1982 UPS obtained use of a portion of the Louisville Airport and began operations from the air hub at Louisville International Airport (“UPS: About UPS,” 2014). The decision to open in Louisville was no mistake: the city of Louisville, Kentucky serves as a major transportation hub for supplies and a logistics support center throughout the United States. Having an international airport with customs access allows UPS to be centrally located in the...... middle of paper...... delivery driver. What would be your suggestions for improving it? A system that sends real-time updates to customers to let them know a closer time frame on when your package will arrive would ensure that more customers would be at home to sign for their package. This would not only save time for the person receiving the package, but it would also save the drivers time, money and gas since there won't be as many redelivery attempts for the next day.
