Americans, especially African Americans, believed that the Declaration of Independence, which called for human equality, was a direct contradiction to slavery. Africans did not only become slaves in America during the Atlantic slave trade; the majority of Africans were actually held as slaves in Africa.5. Attempts to deculturate slaves did not prevent African culture from exerting a profound influence on American culture.
