Effective leadership is a learned experience, you are not “born” a leader as research suggests. The following document compares and contrasts “two views” on leadership traits and skills: a bad leader and a good leader. In working with both leaders over the past twenty-six years, I have learned much about the differences between deception and leadership and the challenges both leaders have faced in addressing their own leadership effectiveness across a range of issues within our organization. Background Our former CEO has been with our organization for twenty-four years. He has a bachelor's degree in business and finance and previously worked as a billing administrator for a radiology group. Our current CEO is the only physician who owns a family-owned private practice. He received extensive leadership training through the hospital system where he served since the early 1980s. Formal Training The former CEO has not received any training in the area of leadership. His promotion to CEO was based on his influence and tact in dealing with external vendors, managers, subordinates and our current CEO. As a result, she was able to be a political navigator as she met other people's needs by positioning herself in a positive light within the organization (Gilley, 2006). TWO VIEWS 3 Our current CEO is a highly respected doctor in our local community. He also held several leadership positions in the local hospital system, as previously mentioned. His roles include chair of the medical executive committee of a five-hospital system, chief of staff for twenty-three years, as well as serving on a multitude of quality committees including quality assurance, peer review, and credentialing.
