“I have not come to judge the world, but to instruct it in humility, to save it and to give an example to my disciples, so that they may do as I do.”-Jesus ( Liber Graduum 19:14) Throughout history, relatively few humans have claimed kingship, many have undertaken the mission of the priesthood, and a select number have claimed to be prophets. One person however claimed to be all three and God. He came with good news, laughter, tears, pain, salvation, healing and justice. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is the only person in history who, in my opinion and the opinion of many others, truly fits the definition of priest, prophet and king. Born of Mary, Jesus of Nazareth is commonly called "Christ", the Greek term synonymous with the "Hebrew" word "Messiah" (Paul, John, II. "King"). The Messiah can be defined in the Hebrew language as the “Anointed One” (Paul, John, II. "King"). King Jesus' title Messiah was foreshadowed in the Old Testament and through Matthew's genealogy; it is proven that he comes from the bloodline of David (Paul, John, II. "King."). Delving deeper into the kingship of Jesus, we discover that his mother Mary was told by the angel Gabriel the position he would hold. "The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end (Luke 1:32-33)." This is similar to the promise made to David, except that God promises Jesus an “everlasting” kingdom. This means that although David was promised a kingdom on Earth, Jesus was promised something beyond... middle of paper... ...ology.cfm>.Journet, Charles. The Theology of the Church: Ignatius, 2004.
