Bipolar is a mood disorder whose exact cause is unknown. Having bipolar disorder is unpredictable and debilitating due to the series of emotional ups and downs the person goes through. Characteristics of bipolar are severe mood swings, changes in sleep patterns, energetic activity, attention deficit, and impulsivity. There are many different variations of the mood patterns of a person with bipolar disorder which can sometimes be quite severe. When these mood patterns occur, you generally go through periods of mania, hypomania, and depression. When patients are in a manic or depressed state they may experience psychotic symptoms.
