Health Care Reform Health care has been an area of discussion for some time now. In the United States, the current healthcare system is a private system that allows people to choose their own method of treatment. Despite the freedom that comes from the independent nature of this type of healthcare system, the actual arrangement creates more problems than it solves. The privacy of healthcare institutions has meant that affordability and access have become serious issues with this system. Additionally, those of lower socioeconomic status do not have the ability to access the same pool of resources as everyone else. Due to issues with affordability, access, and poor healthcare system infrastructure, a universal healthcare system should be in place for all citizens of the United States. Health care is defined as “the maintenance and restoration of health by the treatment and prevention of disease primarily by trained and licensed professionals” (Merriam-Webster). Despite this commonly accepted definition, many argue that the American healthcare system does not adequately meet this definition. The current system uses many different structures to provide health care, including private businesses, government-owned institutions, and some nonprofit organizations. People across the country use different methods to access coverage. Some get health coverage through their employer, while others purchase it privately. Therefore money is a requirement to have access to healthcare, which has manifested itself into an expansive issue. The World Health Organization estimates that the amount of money spent on health care by the United States is greater than that of any other country.
