IntroductionThe field of human resources (HR) plays a critical role in the performance and success of organizations. As organizations have become increasingly complex, effective human resource management has become even more important. The traditional perception of human resources as a mere administrative office is no longer valid. Instead, contemporary human resources are directly involved in internal organizational structure, business operations, and the variety of functions performed by employees on a daily basis (Reed & Bogardus, 2012). HR functions influence the organization's strategic planning, improvement processes and goal achievement. Six core bodies of knowledge provide the foundation for all of these HR functions. These areas are: strategic management; workforce planning and employment; human resources development; total premiums; employees and working relationships; and risk management (Reed & Bogardus, 2012). AT&T is a multimillion-dollar global telecommunications company that employs approximately 242,000 people (AT&T Inc. SWOT Analysis, 2014). The work of AT&T HR professionals is critical to effectively managing this vast workforce. M. Seiler (personal communication, April 4, 2014) is one such HR professional who has held the position of Gulf States Regional Performance Manager for AT&T Mobility for the past four years. Seiler's 15-year career at AT&T included positions as a store clerk, store manager, and regional and territory commission manager (M. Seiler, personal communication, April 4, 2014).
