No one understands what really happened that night, the night John Brown launched his raid on Harpers Ferry. Why it was done, what caused it, and what caused the event itself was later discovered and well known to people centuries after it had taken place. This raid was one of the main reasons why a nation remained divided. The southern part of America was its “nation” while the northern part was considered somewhat the same but opposite. “Midnight Rising” provides an in-depth explanation and insight into the events leading up to and caused by this raid. The book is based on the period before the Civil War (circa 1859). The first part of the book provides an overview and some basic information. Explaining where and when the raid was planned and where it would be carried out, and all this told through the perception of one of John Brown's men. Prior to this event, Bleeding Kansas had occurred which had caused a tremendous amount of outrage, bloodshed, fear, and frustration among almost every single person in the United States at that time. Nat Turner's Rebellion caused a fear-filled uproar in the South and that was one of the things that led to the main event discussed in the book (the raid on Harpers Ferry). During the time period in which the book is set, the Southern part of America was pro-slavery while the North was not, and because of these discrepancies neither side could or would compromise and neither would have been able to able to reach any kind of agreement on what to do. to do with laws and regulations and not even with slaves. Events like Nat Turner's Rebellion are what caused people in the South to become more fearful of slaves” Although Turner failed to gain any slaves, their…just change a little, changed A LOT. In the south it was customary to have a maid and people to do the farming for you, a nanny, a cook, etc. All of this was “slave labor” and as generation after generation was used to seeing slaves do things for them, it remained and became part of the culture. On the other hand there was the north, which had become more industrialized and more self-sufficient and independent and, more educated, growing and progressing, so for them slavery was far from being a part of the culture it was just something horrible. to anyone who is part of their community. This huge gap between the two communities/societies is what led to the final confrontation in all of US history, it was a huge deal and was itself one of the greatest examples of sociological imbalance between a society/society..
