For example, In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, in the scene where the SIM destroys Pedrito's family ranch and arrests both Nelson and Pedrito, Patria shouts “'I was good! I was good!' to heaven” (p.161). This shows that Patria's suffering led SIM to destroy everything it owned; her home, valuables, wedding ring, and both her son and husband. This creates the feeling of the martyr suffering both emotional and physical pain while sacrificing the main points that made up his “life”. Here, the author's use of parallel structure shows how hurt Patria is by using the word “good” to highlight how unfair it was for God to punish Patria and her family.
