The objective of the lesson was for students to understand the characteristics of the text in a nonfiction book. The strategy I used for students to achieve the goal is comprehension skill. Students were introduced to the characteristics of a nonfiction book and provided clarification on why text characteristics are important when using a nonfiction book. At the beginning of the lesson, students were asked to identify the theme of the book they would be working on. All the students were able to explain that we were looking at a book about the ocean. As we began introducing text features to students, we continued to understand how we can determine whether the information provided is fact or opinion. As they read the photo captions, they reflected on the information provided and determined how the information provided was factual. The strength of using comprehension skills during the lesson is that students are learning the features of the text and learning how the features help them understand the main idea of the book. Teaching the lesson on nonfiction text characteristics using the strategic comprehension skill allowed me to informally assess students' ability to understand what they learned as they worked with their partner. Overall, teaching the lesson using comprehension skills as a strategy allowed students to learn the characteristics of nonfiction books when using them
