Cremation versus BurialToday society is looking for ways to make life easier and find solutions to the problems that burden our lives and make survival difficult. For many reasons, traditional burials in this century are becoming a problem. (Prothero,2001). The fact that they cover a lot of land to build cemeteries and other things related to these traditional burials is enough to look for a practical solution. About a century ago the term “cremation” was unknown to many. It is believed to have started being practiced during the early Stone Age and still exists today. Cremations have since been practiced all over the world, but they have never been as popular as they are now in this century. The first and most important for all of us are the costs which are much cheaper for cremations than for funerals. Secondly, cremation does not contaminate the earth and does not cause a bad smell in the ground. Third, a lot of land is saved, which means it has an environmental impact. Over the last hundred years, all over the world, the number of cremations performed has exceeded that of burials and left behind a shocking number. As in 1968 with 35% of funerals consisting of cremations, today in the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, the United States and many other countries the percentage is growing and has reached over 79%. (Mayer, 2013). This is becoming so popular that even small crematorium construction businesses are becoming larger and turning into very well-paid companies. As a matter of fact, nowadays people choose the best options for funerals and do not take into account the so-called old beliefs that religion prohibits cremations.
