ENC1101Gender Roles Everyone Loves Raymond The media plays an important role in what we perceive as socially acceptable stereotypes. With the constant visual concepts that flood the media with what is socially considered the normal role of a man or woman. We are conditioned by gender roles from an early age. Think about how little girls grow up playing with dolls and little boys grow up playing with toy cars. We are conditioned by specific gender roles from birth. What is politically correct is conveyed to us by many examples, and television and the media are one of the main sources. Family sitcoms are a perfect example of how television portrays gender roles and what is considered socially acceptable or “normal” by our society. The television sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond suggests that men have more power in a marriage because they provide for the family and also suggests that women are only good at taking care of children, cooking, cleaning, and providing for their husbands. about what is considered the typical American family. Characters include Raymond Barone, his wife Debra, their twins and a daughter. They live across the street from Ray's parents, Frank and Marie, and Ray's brother, Robert, who also lives with their parents. The show revolves around Ray's family life and the everyday events and problems his family encounters. Raymond is what you would consider the "typical man". His interests are watching sports, having sex and playing golf. Ray is the breadwinner of the family and his wife Debra is the typical stay-at-home mother. Manages all the responsibilities that need to be taken care of on a daily basis. He lost his identity to play the role... of half the paper... of lice officer and an officer of the law is seen as a male figure. If you think about it, even women who are police officers are seen as masculine. Most men who still lived at home with their parents would not be considered a “sir,” but because of Robert's position, he is quite the lord. Even though this is a fictional show and many families are very different from this one. There are many families where both mother and father have to work. There are some families where the mother works and the father is the housewife. There are many single mothers who play the role of mother and father. This show and many other programs and media sources depict gender roles and stereotypes in these ways. The roles played in this show are considered normal gender roles and anything else is considered “different”.”.
