The difference between having money and not having money is huge. As you can see in “The Great Gatsby”, it really shows the differences in life between rich and poor and even the differences between some rich people because of how they get their money. People can almost say that money is everything, it can determine our happiness, how we live and can even determine who we are. Both Daisy and Myrtle want money but only one of them does and that is Daisy. Myrtle lives in a two-story building near a slow gas station operated by her and her husband. Daisy always wears top-notch clothes and accessories while Myrtle is the opposite. He wears dirty and slightly old clothes. Not to mention the fact that Daisy does absolutely nothing during her days. She just does what she wants. Myrtle has to help her husband with their business just so they can survive and try to do business at their gas station. She can't toddle like Daisy. I think they both have the same hopes and dreams, but they're just starting out differently. I also think their hopes and dreams are the same as their love life. Daisy wants to be with Gatsby and Myrtle wants to be with Tom. Even though Myrtle probably wants to be with Tom because of the life he could give her, Daisy already lives that life and would still do so even if she went with Gatsby instead. So I think Daisy aims to be happy with this choice and because Myrtle is so desperate to have money she doesn't care if Tom is a cheater or a villain. You can see in this quote from “The Great Gatsby” while Myrtle is with Tom she buys herself all kinds of presents and doesn't feel guilty about it. He takes his time and gets everything he wants. She had changed her dress into a brown patterned muslin, which extended... to the center of the paper... but her money as Tom does. Gatsby blows so much just to impress Daisy and if he really cared, I have a feeling he wouldn't blow so much. It really shows that Gatsby is a good person at heart and doesn't care about being rich. He just wants to be happy with the love of his life, so he's taken the necessary steps to try to make that happen. Old money is when someone has money through their family and it is passed down like Tom Buchanan did. It's "old" money. The new money is like what Gatsby has. He just got rich working up there. In my opinion, I think “old money” is more arrogant and haughty. All they have ever known is to have money, they have never had to struggle or understand what it means to be poor. While the “new money” people were not always as rich as they are now. I think they are more grateful for their money.
