Daisy had choices to make in the beginning to be with Gatsby, but they were narrowing down to being with Tom when Gatsby left and never heard from her. Gatsby and Tom share more characteristics than we actually see through their interactions. There are little parts of themselves that change and then that turns them into two completely different people, or so we think. They both met, they both loved Daisy, but it's precisely the miner things that make them the same and completely different.
