Daisy had choices to make in the beginning to be with Gatsby, but they were narrowing down to being with Tom when Gatsby left and never heard from her. Gatsby and Tom share more characteristics than we actually see through their interactions. There are little parts of themselves that change and then that turns them into two completely different people, or so we think. They both met, they both loved Daisy, but it's precisely the miner things that make them the same and completely different. Why does Daisy choose Tom in the first place when she could have waited for Gatsby? Why didn't Gatsby persecute her more obviously? Nick says that Tom has been arrogant as long as he has known him and this may be why he is "unhappy" with Daisy and why he is cheating on her. One difference is that Daisy never had the feeling that Gatsby might be dead and gone forever. In the dispute between Gatsby and Tom, Tom says "She didn't know you were alive."
