Equipment Downtime and Lost Time Incidents For many years, Aerojet Maintenance has struggled with worker injuries and lost time or time away from work associated with such injuries. In addition to the issue of wasted time, machinery breakdowns and obsolete and antiquated machinery are the main problems that the maintenance department has to deal with on a daily basis. From an initial examination, there appeared to be a connection between when employees suffered workplace injuries and when one or more pieces of equipment were out of service. Since these problems have a significant impact on the maintenance department and consequently on the overall annual budget allocation, this team's project was to determine if there is a correlation between machinery breakdowns and time-wasting incidents within the department of maintenance. If the hypothesis is correct, the effect of equipment downtime on the overall annual budget is greater than initially expected, as is the effect of employee injuries. The first point the team wanted to address was the high amount of paid time in the maintenance department. The first process of the research was for staff to identify what the problem was. A survey was designed to ask maintenance personnel whether the problem came from management or the work environment. The questions were designed based on the Q12 survey of Gallup organizations. Questions were assigned a value from 1 to 5 from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The questions of the survey addressed to workers were the following:1. I have received recognition in the last five days2. I have the best work tools3. I have all the equipment needed to do the best job possible4. I know what is expected of me at work5. I feel like someone at my job cares about my success. There are seventy-seven workers in the maintenance department and the team chose one in eleven people on the payroll to carry out the survey. The results of the survey among the seven selected people make everyone strongly disagree with the idea of having the best work tools, and I have all the equipment necessary to do the best job possible. Other questions ranged from agree to strongly agree with I know what is expected of me at work, I have received recognition in the last five days, and I feel like someone cares about my success. From the survey results, the management aspect did not appear to be the problem, however the equipment received the most negative responses.
