Many people find editing in film difficult to notice. this is a good thing because it means that the editor has done a good job of creating a smooth rhythm within the cuts. Of course we know that whenever there is a change in the image it is an edit, but most of us find it difficult to consciously notice the transitions throughout the film. It's because we don't notice the editing that we assume it's "easy." However, "montage is much more than simply putting two images together, it is a language, a discipline, an art." (Videomaker.com, 2014)One of the inventors of cinema, August Lumiere, said that cinema “can be exploited for a while as a scientific curiosity; beyond that it had no commercial future." Many film pioneers such as George Melies, Edwin S. Porter, and DW Griffith have set out to prove this statement wrong. They turned Lumiere's invention into an art form. Instead of letting a scene unfold, the audience's eye focuses on a specific moment or moment. They then put these shots together and created a story. As they continued to do so, they slowly realized that a new cinematic language had been created. They needed people with advanced technical skills and who had an eye for putting a story together perfectly. The French called them “Monteurs” which in English means “builders”. These people were editors, artists, cinema builders. Lev Kuleshov saw all this. He noticed the need for publishers, so he conducted an artistic experiment to determine whether this skill could be considered art or not. He used juxtaposition to perform this test. Lev decided to juxtapose a close-up of a famous actor with a shot of a bowl of soup.
