There is a prehistoric and mysterious monument on Salisbury Plain about which we have limited information: Stonehenge. For years there have been numerous discussions about Stone-henge; some people think it was created by aliens and many people associate it with the Druids and Merlin. This article will explain when Stonehenge was built, who built it and what theories there were about the mystery of Stonehenge. Stonehenge is a statue that had been placed in Wessex, England and it was not known exactly who built it or for what reason. what purpose it was built. As was told in the book Stonehenge by Caroline Malone and Nancy Stone Bernard “the meaning of the name Stonehenge is 'hanging stones' because people thought that the stones hung from the uprights” (10). Stonehenge was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (Malone, 8). Unfortunately Stonehenge has been badly affected by careless people and much of this negative effect is due to tourist erosion. Despite the deterioration of the surface of the stones, many archaeologists and historians have carried out extensive research on this matter. Today one of the facts we learn is the age of Stonehenge. Thanks to 21st century technology, we have learned that Stonehenge is approximately 5,000 years old (Malone, 10). When we look at the images that show us how Stonehenge was seen in the past and compare these images with the current appearance of Stonehenge, we can easily say that only half of the large sarsens have survived, some of the lintels have fallen. The most regrettable part of the stones concerns the blue stones; in The Making of Stonehenge Castleden thinks that "the blue stones are a more manageable size, so many more were taken away". (5)...... middle of paper...... Stonehenge's main purpose and design is thought to be to create a horseshoe and circle. Their builders were most likely the inhabitants of Beaker who lived 3,500 years ago. They came and invaded Salisbury Plain. It is possible that the people of Beaker built Stonehenge because they wanted to create a home for their ancestors and the dead. According to archaeologists, Stonehenge is only a part of a monument of a more enormous design. The other part of the religious monument may have been a wooden structure. It is believed that in some parts of the year people went there for religious ceremonies. According to their beliefs, death and life symbolize cycles. When they went to the area where Stonehenge is located, they took the corpses of their relatives. Finally, it can be said that Stone-henge was used as a temple, was precious and at the center of many religious feelings.
