In the graphic novel, Persepolis, the main character, Marjane, goes through many moments of growth. Each of these changes her in a way that affects her view of the world around her as she and her family fight for a better life in a war that hinders their ability to follow their beliefs. Marjane learns to forgive, experiences pain and suffering, and forever changes her views on God and her view of religion. Marjane's life was full of difficult moments, but also glorious moments. One of Marjane's first moments of maturity happens quite quickly. He learns that his grandfather was tortured by being trapped in a cell filled with water. He tries to feel his pain by spending several hours in the bathtub (p. 25). Before this moment, Marjane didn't know that the people she knew could experience as much pain and torture as her grandfather experienced. He received a piggyback ride from his grandfather without realizing that every step he took made him suffer even more. After discovering this fact, he feels empathy for his grandfather.
