Topic > Why I would vote for the New Democratic Party

If I had the right to vote, I would vote for the New Democratic Party, or NDP. As we discussed in class, the NDP follows a socialist ideology, placing them on the left of the political spectrum. While the activity we did in class puts me more towards the center of the spectrum, upon further analysis, I agree with many of the NDP's views. One of their policies that I personally agree with is the promise to develop a “green economy” and invest in new jobs and transition programs for the sector. This is a decision I strongly support, as climate change and global warming have increased rapidly in recent years. Say no to plagiarism. Investing in job creation in the sector will ensure that the economy remains stable and that citizens who previously worked in sectors that revolve around less green solutions can still contribute to the economy. Another policy I support is changing the majoritarian electoral system to mixed proportional representation. As we discussed in class, the majoritarian system is not an efficient system for electing a representative government. In comparison, the mixed-member system is much more efficient and representative of the entire governed population. This means I would have a better chance of getting the politician of my choice in any election and could vote without thinking strategically. One final point I support is tuition-free/reduced post-secondary education. Post-secondary education is a necessity for employment in the modern era, but rising college tuition has made it difficult for students to obtain an education after secondary school. Those who obtain such education fall into debt soon after entering the workforce. Currently, the NDP plans to assist provincial governments in reducing post-secondary university tuition, and two of the four NDP candidates expressed their support for tuition-free post-secondary education during the leaders elections. These two were not elected as leaders, yet their opinions are still important within the NDP. This means that the current leader Jagmeet Singh could very well achieve this goal once he takes office. As a student planning to pursue a post-secondary education, this could be extremely beneficial for me, as I intend to obtain a Ph.D. Please note: this is just an example. My vote would go to the party thanks to three strong policies in its electoral platform: the promise to develop a green economy by investing in new jobs in that economy, the decision to change the majoritarian electoral system with a system of equal representation and the their policy to reduce/eliminate tuition for post-secondary education.
