Imagine a six-year-old girl who wants to skate on an ice rink. This girl loves to skate and was excited. Her mother became angry when the employee told her her daughter couldn't be on the rink because she had to be in a wheelchair. Also the mom realized the same day that they had no accessible parking, so she told the city and they ended up creating 2 accessible parking spaces. Luckily there was a law in place that could do something about this incident and eventually they got to go skating because there were laws against discrimination. The United States is considering enacting new laws that protect people with disabilities, but there are pros and cons to this issue. The CRPD was established to look into the issue and provide advice to legislators. Many articles have been written on this topic and two of them are “The government should specifically enforce disability rights” and “A fine balance: reconsidering patient autonomy in light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” by Jillian Craigie. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was not controversial at first. According to the author, the CRPD is “an international treaty intended to improve the treatment of people with disabilities worldwide”. (“Should the Government”, 2013). The treaty has been most successful in developing countries where people with disabilities often don't have what they need. According to the author, “Even in the United States, one of the world leaders in disability rights, people with disabilities suffer considerably higher rates of poverty and unemployment than people without disabilities.” (“Should the Government,” 2013). There were people who objected to...... middle of paper ......th issue. Craigie and "Should the Government" both expressed opinions about how it might not work so well and people would want it too. However, at the same time, both point out that the CRPD could be beneficial. “The Government Should” focuses on the fact that the CRPD is based on the Americans with Disabilities Act and Craigie has focused on helping people with mental health issues through the CRPD. People with disabilities around the world need equality and autonomy to live their lives the way they want to live it. Giving people with disabilities equality and autonomy will help improve their lives, as all people in the world want. Helping people with disabilities is something that needs to be addressed by all people, not just the government, and using the CRPD in conjunction with the Americans with Disabilities Act will do just that..
