Topic > Taking a Look at Nicomachean Ethics - 942

Nicomachean Ethics I chose to write about Aristotle and his beliefs about how virtuous human beings need friends from Book VIII of the Nicomachean Ethics. In this essay I will talk about the three different types of friendship that Aristotle claims exist (Utility, Pleasure and Goodness). I will also discuss later in my article why Aristotle believes that goodness is the better type of friendship than utility or pleasure. Apart from that I will also talk about the similarities and differences that these three friendships share with each other. And finally I will discuss why I personally agree with Aristotle and his sentiments about how friendship and virtue go hand in hand and depend on each other. Aristotle believes that everyone needs some kind of friend, he states that "for rich people and those who rule and hold power, there seems to be the greatest need for friends. or poor. There are three distinct types of friendship towards which Aristotle addresses his beliefs. These three types of friendship include: Utility, pleasure, and Goodness or virtuous friendship Aristotle believes that friendship is something extremely important to have and should be considered above many things. Friendship Utility is different from friendships of pleasure or goodness because, as Aristotle says, it is "for old men" and explains that friendship Utility is a friendship that two people can have in which they communicate with each other only to personal gain or to get something for themselves These two people are unlikely to live together and sometimes they may not even be kind to paper and do not have what it takes for a true friendship to flourish. Aristotle talks about how “cities are built around friendships” and believes this is so true because friendships can mature into such great things. A friendship is made up of so many things within it, a true virtuous relationship is based on communication, trust, loyalty and many other things. These qualities that constitute a good friendship are non-existent in a relationship of utility or pleasure. Looking at the three types of friendship that Aristotle says exist, it appears quite clear which is the best of all. Aristotle says that virtue is what makes a friendship so great, the participants in the friendship bring out mutual goodness and mutual recognition. These components of a virtuous friendship are why they make it the best kind of friendship there is.
