Today we would see more female trainers than at the time of the film, which was 1971. In the textbook it says that Title IX was not enacted until 1972, which was a year later. With this act, high school girls' athletic participation increased immensely. The only female protagonists in the film were the mothers or daughters of the coaches or players on the team. They had no female coaches to assist the men. The film shows that blacks were not favored to hold high positions such as head coach of the football team according to whites. All the coaches in the state were white, and that's why it was a big deal for an African American to hold a higher position than whites
