How would you feel if someone told you that you can't marry the love of your life simply because society doesn't think it's right? Can you imagine the devastation you would feel if you were told that you are an inferior specimen to my society? This travesty occurs daily in our country. Same-sex marriage should be legalized nationwide in the United States with a law or amendment because it is a step toward equality for all. There are many obstacles in the way of national legalization of same-sex marriage. The most widespread of these are the current government laws on the matter. Some of the laws the government has adopted to “protect marriage” are nothing short of barbaric. Another obstacle to national legalization of same-sex marriage is society's current view on the topic, which is often that it shouldn't be legal, even if they don't know why they think so. There are a few ways national legalization of same-sex marriage can be accomplished, and none of them are easy or will happen overnight. Legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide would be a huge step forward in society and would help promote tolerance throughout our country. There are many laws in the United States today that place unfair restrictions on same-sex marriage. Much of the root of these laws is based on societal prejudices rather than what people would truly believe is right and wrong if they could look at the world as a whole and see the injustices inflicted on people other than themselves.
