I chose an article titled “World War II” from the Colombian Electronic Encyclopedia. It is a detailed account of the Second World War. It explains how the war began, as well as the major events that followed it and how it affected the United States. I found that this article connected to our book in many ways. The story takes place during the time when World War II occurred and the characters' entire lives revolve around it. The author begins by introducing the causes of World War II and the events that occurred before it reached the United States. Most of it was influenced by the First World War. The three powers of the principal axis; Italy, Germany and Japan developed a dictatorship and positioned themselves as leaders of communism. The goal of these countries was expansion at all costs and the spread of communism. World War II began when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 without warning. There was a short period of time afterwards where Germany remained in place for about six months. Unfortunately, German forces made another surprise attack, this time against Denmark and Norway on April 9, 1940. Denmark was taken without a fight and Norway was conquered within a month. Italy soon entered the war under the Axis powers and Britain was the only remaining Allied force. However, after an attempted invasion of Soviet Russia by the Germans, Italians, and other smaller countries, Soviet Russia joined the Allied team. The United States tried to remain neutral at the beginning of the war by lending aid to many countries such as Iceland and Greenland and Great Britain. However, tension within the United States grew as the attacks continued and Japan began to invade neighboring countries. However, all attempts to remain neutral have been lost... halfway through the card... train there. Many students simply think that growing up only to fight and possibly die is the only goal they should try to achieve. All in all, I thought this was a very informative article. It was very interesting to learn about the events of the war and their impact on the United States. I think it would be very difficult to live thinking that my only purpose is to go out and fight. However, it has simply become a way of life for these students. I also liked how I was able to easily connect the information to the book and could better understand what the characters were going through after reading this article. World War II was one of the most traumatic battles in history and managed to affect everyone during that time. Works Cited "World War II". Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th edition (2013): 1-4.
