Becoming a Teacher: My Philosophy on EducationWhen did education begin? Do we still need education to function as a society? How long will public education remain a kindergarten through twelfth grade curriculum? The answers to these questions will vary from person to person, but they will all have a common theme: education can and must continue! Education is the key to a progressive society. Education is the only way knowledge is passed on from generation to generation. In this article I will explain why I want to teach, my educational goals, and the philosophy I will use throughout my teaching career. Becoming a teacher in today's society is not the best choice in our society. People tend to belittle the teaching profession as it doesn't pay enough money. I was told I shouldn't become a teacher because of this and even considered not becoming a teacher because of the poor pay. Now, I would have to disagree with this precept. Teaching is probably one of the most underpaid careers one can choose; but for me I believe personal satisfaction outweighs pay. Teachers won't have the biggest houses or the most expensive cars, but I honestly don't try to get them. I believe that teaching requires great skill and professionalism. To teach someone, you need to know the subject you are teaching well. The field of education is not for everyone; it takes a special person who has a genuine love for children and can motivate students to learn. My love for a subject, secondary mathematics, and my natural desire to help others are the reasons why I want to become a teacher. From… middle of paper… as philosophy because I believe a student should learn ideas that have lasted for centuries and use the ideas within the classroom. For example, a student should be forced to use the rules for derivatives in calculus because they have endured over time. When I become a teacher I hope to incorporate all of these philosophies into my classroom. Teaching is not a profession that today's society would define as a rewarding profession due to the demands and low wages. For a while I struggled with not being able to earn enough, but I have since put that behind me. I realize that I can change some students' lives. This is more rewarding than money and will impact my students for years and years to come. I strive to be the best teacher I can so that my students can enjoy school and maybe, one day, want to become a teacher too.
