Writing has always been one of the things I've been passionate about. Whenever I have something on my mind, I jot it down or write it down in my notes. No matter how small or pathetic it may seem, I would always write it, because you never know when you will come back to it and create something great, driven by inspiration. People would think that a person like me would write poetry or new ideas. That's absolutely true, but I also write recipes, grocery lists, hate lists, and literally anything that comes to mind. I'm the kind of person who doesn't like to miss anything, forget anything and who likes to include everything. People would say I'm a perfectionist or a control freak, and as much as I'd hate to admit it, that's true. While these traits can hinder my writing process, I have learned to embrace them this school year. When I write an article, I usually tend to write and edit at the same time. I could never continue writing without correcting my mistakes and making sure everything looks perfect. However, during this course, I realized that I should write everything down in my head, when writing an article, just like I would in my notes. Next, I should review and edit my article, making sure to eliminate off-topic ideas and sentences. Plus, I'm the kind of person who likes to write without boundaries. Writing my research argument essay made me realize that I could stick to a structure and yet bend the rules a little. When we started on this assignment, I was really excited to research and write about a topic I'm passionate about. When we were asked to draw an outline, I was disappointed. I felt like I wasn't able to come up with ideas or narrow down my topic, let alone write... in the middle of the paper... previously, sometimes in the middle of a discussion, people forget that there are two sides to a story and not everyone has to agree with yours. What we learn from our books or our studies is not what is necessarily important. What we learn from our peers and our professors is what is important. Learning is more than just absorbing facts, it is gaining understanding and becoming passionate about the material you are given. Every piece we read in class and every comment we make has an impact on a person, no matter how little it seems. Education systems focus too much on effective teaching methods and not enough on effective learning methods. However, this course felt like we were learning something instead of trying to complete the curriculum. As Albert Einstein once said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think”.
