The Gilded Age changed the daily lives of Americans. There were many new inventions. They changed the way people worked on farms and the way they communicated with family and friends. People came from China and Europe to find a new life here. They left poverty to come here to find wealth. It wasn't as easy as they thought. During this time Irish immigrants arrived in America. When they arrived they were going through difficult times at home. They came to change their lives. When they got here they found out it wasn't what they expected. They had to undergo an inspection. The first thing they had to do was do a physical exam. People with serious health problems were sent back. If they stopped by, they told them their occupation, name and financial situation. Most of them worked on railways and canals. They had little, they didn't have much money. They had a very low income. When the Germans first came here they had trouble finding work. They took whatever job they could find. Most of them worked in sweatshops. They had no money, if they had any, they had very little. They came here for a new life, so they work hard to have the life they wanted to live. When Chinese immigrants started coming here they had to go through a similar exception to Elis Island, but they went to Angle Island. They worked on the railroads when they first arrived. Some of them went to settle in western cities. They also worked in sweatshops and mines. Mines were very dangerous and terrible according to Stephen Crane McClure. (www.peterpappas.com) Americans began to fear that there would not be enough jobs for everyone. So Congress banned Chinese immigrants for the next ten years and they called it the Chinese Exclusion Act.......middle of paper...the people who used to come here all clustered in one area. Farmers also moved to urban areas. Fewer farmers means less food production. More and more people worked in factories, which polluted the air. With the invention of trams and trains they also polluted the air. Other things that harm are segregation. It was like a wedge because it made people look down on other people if they weren't like them. “. But those who are below are crushed." Henry George said. (www.peterpappas.com) These are just a couple of negative aspects of the Gilded Age. I think the Gilded Age changes people's daily lives. If it didn't happen we wouldn't have the things we do today. Life would be very different. During this time people were not treated fairly. Many people have had a hard time during this. Yet there are good things that happen here. Things that have changed the country and its daily life.
