During World War II Danny and Reuven met for the first time. Inside The Chosen, by Chaim Potok there are three quotes. Each quote represents the beginning of a new part of the book. Each part of the book contains a little more of the story of the friendship between Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders. The first quote can be linked to Reuven's obedience towards his father, the second quote illustrates Saunders' point of silence and the third quote explains that silence can be used as a means of communication. 4Quoted at the beginning of the book is “I was my father's son...And he taught me and said to me, 'Let your heart retain my words...'” – Proverbs. This quote refers to Reuven's obedience to his father, David Malter. When Reuven and Danny first meet in the book, Danny accidentally injures Reuven's eye. And when Danny comes to apologize, Reuven refuses. Reuven's father also came to visit him that day. When Reuven explains the situation he had with Danny that day, his father tells him that he must forgive him.
