Topic > Leaders' Mistakes and Their Acceptance - 663

On June 17, 1972, the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon, as result of the attempt to cover up the break-in. In Sophocles' Antigone, the blind prophet Tiresias says to Creon, king of Thebes: "Think: all men make mistakes, but a good man surrenders when he knows that his conduct is wrong, and repairs the evil: the only crime is the 'pride". Tiresias says that no one is perfect, but what makes a man good is his ability to accept his mistakes and forget his pride, but Creon does nothing to change. While pride in one's accomplishments is good, it should be disguised as what is best for everyone rather than what is best for one's own pride because it can give a person respect. People should be proud of what they have accomplished. Achilles, the hero of the Iliad, was greatly revered by the ancient Greeks for his skill as a great warrior. He was very proud of his achievements and considered himself superior to others, and people praised him for it. Many people in today's society would label him as arrogant, but in reality he should be praised for being proud of what he has done because he has superior abilities. Similarly, in the Old English epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf defeats enemies that no other man has ever managed to do. He boasted about what he had done to others, but unlike most people who boast, Beowulf had done what others had never done before. In the last few days, he praises people a lot for their achievements because they are somehow compromised. For example, the company praises Stephen Hawking, who is proud of his work in theoretical physics, much more than Jason Lezak, who is proud of having won the 4x100 relay at...... middle of paper.... ..And . This action, although many disagree, makes Nixon a better person because, unlike Antigone's Creon, he was willing to admit his mistake and tell the truth. Most people don't admit their mistakes because they are arrogant and have too much pride to do so. This is because the right choice is often not the easy one to make, but if made, it is what makes that person a better man. People should forget about pride and do what is best for others because it makes them a better person, although being proud of your achievements is commendable. It is important to realize that modern society does not usually praise an individual's pride because it considers him arrogant and boastful. Furthermore, people should strive to do what is best for the most people and admit their mistakes, because this makes them better people, even if they have to abandon their own beliefs..
