Topic > The Effects of Wolves on Game Populations - 1059

The reintroduction of wolves has had effects on game animals that have crossed the Rocky Mountain West. In many ways wolves have been a negative influence. They have caused problems for many game populations, including deer, elk, and many others. What caused these problems, how do wolves hunt, and how do we control them? The original wolves were very different from the planted ones. So while conservationists thought they were helping to solve environmental problems, they managed to do the opposite, bringing back the wrong kind of wolves they created, depleting moose populations and wild game. In 1995, conservationists began repopulating wolves. Wolves began to spread like rabbits, into many states including Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Washington. The main area under the spotlight would be Yellowstone because its national park immediately hit the news and press. People came from all over the world to see a Yellowstone wolf. They thought that if they planted more wolves it would bring balance to the game. For almost seventy years wolves were few and far between. Mostly because of trapping and the fact that everyone who lives in Idaho hates wolves. Today wolves kill whatever they find, they don't care if it's your dog or a farmer's cow they see killed. An unknown hunter had gone hunting with his dogs, 3 of them were lost and the next day he went out to find that they had all been killed by wolves. One of them was eaten almost to the bone while the other two were injured to the point of death. He was very upset and couldn't do anything about it because there is no law that protects dogs. To fully understand how wolves affect game animals you need to fully understand… middle of paper… ally. There are many rules and regulations about how and where they can be collected. Conservationists thought they were helping to level the environment, but instead they made wolf harvesting legal. Due to overpopulation they have caused many problems from farmers to hunters, even some game. In some way they may have contributed to illegal wolf poaching by making the purchase of tags and trapping permits legal. There are many ways the government and people who care about wolves and those affected are working to solve this problem.
