Both were great warriors and won many battles before being defeated. Both were considered heroes of their time, but their reasons for fighting are very different. Hector is heroic because he decides to go to war, even if he doesn't want to leave his family. Hector doesn't want to leave his son fatherless and not be there for his wife, but he knows that in the end he will have to do what will help protect his countrymen. Hector is the type of warrior who can fight whenever he wants but has feelings and cares about other people. Achilles shows no mercy towards his opponents in the story. He taunts them and says his time has come to die and his time is not today. A difference between Hector and Achilles is that Hector feels fear, while Achilles does not know what fear is, he has never overcome it but understands that he will meet his fate. Achilles has a more evil emotion shown when he stabs Hector's body after Hector is killed. Hector's reason for fighting is very different from Achilles'. Achilles seeks glory and to be remembered. Achilles is selfish as he would not take only himself from his people. Hector fights only to protect the people of Troy. Both men display heroism through the authority they have over their army. Both men provide the reader with an idea of great courage and valor. In the poem Hector promises Achilles that if he is defeated, he will hand over his corpse to the Achaeans. Nut Achilles does not do the same, he says: "Lions do not get along with men, nor does the wolf get along with the lamp, they are enemies to the end." It's the same with you and me. Friendship between us is impossible, and there will be no truce of any line until one of us has fallen and glued the obstinate god of the best with his blood. "(Homer) Achilles does not show himself honoring Hector when he is dead until Priam comes and begs for a proper burial for his son
