Some schools have voluntarily changed their team names. In 2005, the NCAA required colleges to evaluate the potential offensiveness of their team's name, symbol or mascot and obtain permission from the affected group. In North Dakota, the state university tried to abandon the Fighting Sioux nickname; the state legislature blocked the move and then reversed the decision. Also in the state of Mississippi, Alcorn State University stopped using a Native American mascot, but kept the Braves nickname. This indicates that a significant discussion is taking place about the use of these terms and images; hopefully, they are close to being so
