Imposing green taxes on the carbon content of fuels will help relieve pressure on our environment. If the federal government could come up with stronger carbon laws that impose taxes on fuels or carbon-emitting resources that have a large impact on the environment, it would help change the way big businesses operate today. Given our nations' large appetite for natural resources, and while this complements their continued destruction of the environment, the United States is one of the largest polluters, our government can set a standard for how companies should pay for their impact on the environment. Energy taxes will lead to the real cost of resources and the innovation of new technologies that will reduce emissions. The United States does not have a formal carbon tax that the federal government imposes on its citizens or large corporations. States take matters into their own hands and tax how efficiently a car should run based on its “footprint.” (1) Since 1970 car manufacturers have been able to produce new, much lighter and stronger metals and fuel-efficient engines that can run for many years. Does this affect the price of fuel? Yes, it does and for a time it affects the price at the pump for consumers. But in turn, what this does is bring scientists back to the drawing board to find better and new ways in which fuel should burn, metals should break down, and even strengthen alternative composites. Before 1990, lead was used in fuels to lubricate and cool the engine. Fuel is rated by octane rating, most of us think of it as regular, unleaded and super unleaded gas, but octane has a numerical value and in the United States, 3 different ratings. Octane rating can be defined as the flash point at which a fuel burns and the efficiency with which it burns completely...... middle of paper......le? It doesn't make any logical sense. Hawkens believes that business is moving towards a transformation that will be disordered or where companies will accept their role in the world and transform themselves and undertake the restorative process of change. Green taxes are just the beginning, the thinking and lifestyle of how a business should operate must be ingrained in improving the environment. Instead of passing on high costs to the consumer, we will opt for renewable resources; it will not be waste thrown into rivers, but waste sold to another company for their consumption and profit. It may be that multinationals in this country adopt a policy for these types of taxes, that the United States is an example of change so that the rest of the world can understand its impact on the environment and follow suit. This planet is the only planet we have, now is the time to act.
