Gang members are recruited at all ages and most join for different reasons. Many young people are attracted to gangs not by the need for protection, but by the supposed allure of a lifestyle celebrated in many areas of modern culture (Burell). Children are influenced by what they see on TV and in movies, and many films depict gang life as a very busy and interesting life that attracts children to experience this life on their own. Films like Boyz N'da Hood, Juice, Scarface, and Menace II Society portray the good, the bad, and the ugly of gang life, but they don't simply show it as bad. They bring Hollywood gangs to life and make kids believe that gangs are easy and fun with lots of shootings, instead of dangerous and unhealthy. This may explain why “more than a quarter of public middle and high schools have gangs and drugs on their campuses” and why “4 percent of teens report the presence of gangs in public schools, compared to only 29 percent of teens in schools private and religious". schools” (Geiger). This is why the gangs must be stopped at the source. If tougher laws were imposed on gang leaders, keeping them in prison, then they would not be able to recruit our youth, which would reduce the spread of gangs. Let leaders serve as an example to other members and show what happens when you commit gang crimes. Until members see the severity of their crimes and the consequences, they will not change. Harsher punishments are also needed for children involved in gang activity. The cause of gang involvement must be found among our youth and when gang crimes are committed they must be punished to the fullest extent. Youth leaders must also be found and punished. Once the leaders are eliminated, the others will fall. Most of the youth commit gang crime due to lack
