It is estimated that bullying affects nearly 40% of American adults. Abused workers who belong to a protected class (race, national origin, age, gender, among others) can sue under civil rights laws, but bullying itself is not considered illegal. Before starting her new job at the university, Joy was warned of her future workplace's shaky reputation by her colleagues and the headhunter, but a high salary offer and an exciting challenge convinced her to accept the job. As it turned out from the start, the job wasn't what he'd hoped for. Work responsibilities were confusing and not clearly delineated, and there was a lack of support and resources for Joy's function.
