Americans and immigrants are given the idea that "America [is] some kind of magical environment or society that has the power to transform people's lives, for the better " (Lesson 9/9 /13). Although this conception is correct in numerous cases, there is a specific case where the opposite is proven. The Sacco and Vanzetti trial shattered the ideal of “American freedom” and revealed the values ​​that America actually had at the time of the trial. America began to bequeath a negative connotation to radical politicians after President McKinley's assassin proclaimed “Anarchist” after killing the President. As a result of the assassination and the Red Scare, America feared the radical beliefs and ideals of left wing supporters. Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were regular, hard-working Italian immigrants who emigrated to the United States to achieve American success and provide a better life. for their families. In September 1920, these two men were indicted for the robbery and murder that had occurred in Braintree, Massachusetts the previous April. The robbery involved the killing of two men and the theft of the Slater & Morrill Shoe Company (class of 9/16/13). During the trial, prosecutors consistently showed evidence about the two immigrants' political views, including evidence that the men attended weekly anarchist meetings. Sacco and Vanzetti were also questioned several times about their obligations to America; both of these charges have nothing to do with the murder and robbery trial. Overall, the defense had strong arguments: disproving the accusations that Sacco possessed the murder weapon, validating that Sacco did not possess the hat found at the crime scene...... middle of paper...... h the eyes of other citizens. America was a country run by educated white males who were often closed-minded about integrating other “types” of people into their country. Through the work and protests of many, the controversy has allowed public opinion to become aware of the undeserved execution of two hard-working immigrants. Sacco and Vanzetti were symbols of how the American dream was limited to people of a certain race, social class, and/or political beliefs. This time in America was a time of fear and paranoia of the unknown and the process allowed America to broaden its views of immigrants. Their deaths were shocking, but they were not in vain; they demonstrated that the United States needed to improve tolerance towards its citizens. Their legacy lives on today and will continue to serve as a model for the competing ideals of American freedom.
