While this does indeed reduce the number of chases and the resulting damage, it also allows criminals to escape without any challenge. Therefore, some agencies are experimenting with new ways to control tasks and complete them quickly and safely. The first method is through the external use of products such as OnStar (Baker, 2008). The police contact OnStar and when ready, OnStar takes control of the accelerator and begins to slow the vehicle to a stop where the police can then take control (Baker, 2008). Another new method is the use of global positioning system (GPS) projectiles. While it might sound like science fiction, GPS projectiles are large tubes containing a GPS and a sticker that are mounted on the grill of a police car and can be fired into the back of a fleeing vehicle (Fischbach, 2015). They can be shot during a chase, and once attacked, police officers slow down to a safe speed and continue to follow the vehicle using GPS (Fischbach, 2015). Although they may seem extremely high-tech and expensive, they are no more expensive than on-board video systems (Fischbach, 2015). Options like these allow officers to safely track and arrest the criminal without endangering themselves or the lives of innocents
