That was until the 1980s. During the 1980s the Christian right experienced its resurgence in the United States. So fundamentalists once again began trying to introduce creationism into the school system, legally of course. They wanted to make sure that everything their children were taught followed the teachings of the church. They basically wanted evolution to end and creationism to come in. What followed was another major trial based on creationism against evolution. The trial that followed the resurgence of the Christian Right was the case of Edwards v. Aguillard, which occurred in 1987. This trial took place because of a law passed by the Louisiana legislature in 1981. The law mentioned was called the Creationism Act; this act stated that it is illegal to teach evolution alone unless accompanied by the teachings of creationism. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately struck down the law because it was said to have violated the former's Establishment Clause
